was, one, that the nra's arguments on self-defense, the need for more gun prosecutions are not credible. and second, that he can't do this on his own. if we're going to have serious change on gun policy, we need to have a national movement akin to the national movement to change public opinion on the iraq war. congress should bring the victims of newtown up to capitol hill who would be willing to call for serious changes in gun policy. i think shows like this show have to focus on the fact we have a new toub that occurs in this country every single day. 30 americans on average are killed every day from handgun violence. i think we need massive protests against irresponsible retailers like walmart who sell assault weapons and make them available to anyone -- pretty much anybody that asks. the question is not whether or not we'll have change. the question is whether or not progressives, independents and fair-minded republicans will form a national based movement that will really expose the need for this. one place we might start is asking congress if they believe in the s

the nra to the table in a very sort of high pressure timetable right now? >> reporter: this struck me because when the president was asked about this during questioning, he said that he has faith basically in members of the nra. so making it clear that he's going to be trying to appeal to actual members as mothers and fathers, that he said when you look at the nra, there are a lot of people there who want to be sure that people go through background checks, they want to make sure that kids are safe. he thinks that there is sort of a place where nra members don't want to see military style weapons in the hands of people, a period or might do harm. that was sort of where he was looking and using the bully pulpit. friday, we'll be hearing from the nra for first time. they have been saying no comment. they have remained mum following the shooting in connecticut on friday. but this is just a really a sign now that things are very much heating up here, that we will be hearing from them on friday and that we heard from the president getting specific today, brooke. >> nra releasing a statemen

a legislative vote. for now it looks like the nra and wayne lapierre have not been invited by vice president biden to talk about ways to reduce gun violence. according to the nra's president david keene there's been no contact from the white house to include them in this process. piers morgan has penned an op-ed for those who want to see him deported for his views on gun control saying although i love the country as a second home and one that has treated me incredibly well, i would as a concerned parent first seriously consider deporting myself. and actor charlie sheen is at it again, but this time he has company. on saturday sheen sent out this tweet to the mayor of l.a. who knows how to party. tweeted a picture of sheen and the mayor of l.a. at a rooftop bar in mexico and it was only a matter of time. about the nra? >> well, the nra is an organization that has members who are mothers and fathers. i would expect that they've been impacted by this as well, and hopefully they'll do some self-reflection. here's what we know. that any single gun law can't solve all these problems. we're going to have to look at mental health issues and look at schools. there's a whole range of things that joe's group looks at. we know that issues of gun safety will be an element of it. you know, what we've seen over the last 20 years, 15 years is this sense that anything related to guns is somehow an encroachment on the second amendment. what we're looking for is here a thoughtful approach that says, we can preserve our second amendment. we can make sure that responsible gun owners are able to carry out their activities, but that we're going to actually be serious about the safety side of this. that we're going to be serious about making sure that something like newtown or aurora doesn't happen again. there is a big chunk of space between what, you know, the second amendment means and having no rules at al
